In 1363, with the blessing of St. Sergius of Radonezh ( ), the Novgorod monks Fyodor and Paul founded the Boris and Gleb monastery in honor of the first sainted Russian princes Boris and Gleb ( ). The princes of Moscow and the first Russian tsars loved this monastery. Here they confessed and were baptized, and many of them came here to escape from enemies. At the end of the 14th century, a hero of the Battle of Kulikovo, Peresvet ( ), was tonsured and entered the monastery.

In the 16th and 17th centuries, thanks to the contributions of princes and kings, the Boris and Gleb Monastery became one of the richest monasteries in the Rostov metropolitanate. The treasures and pilgrims were protected by a powerful wall, 10-12 meters high and 3 meters thick.

The Boris and Gleb Monastery can be considered the most holistic ensemble of 16th and 17th century architecture in Russia. In addition to the walls and towers, it includes the cathedral of Boris and Gleb (1522-1523), the Annunciation Church with refectory (1524-1526), the Sergiyevskaya gate church (1679) and other buildings.
