Der Istanbuler Stadtteil Eminönü liegt direkt am Goldenen Horn, dort wo die Galatabrücke den Halic (gesprochen Halitsch), wie das Goldene Horn auf Türkisch heißt, überquert. Auf dem großen Platz hier ist immer etwas los. Ganz besonders trifft das auf den Bereich vor der Yeni Cami und dem Ägyptischen Basar (= Gewürzbasar) zu. Dort tummeln sich die fliegenden Händler und Imbißverkäufer, die ihre Kundschaft im Vorübergehen ansprechen. Ein Teil bietet Futter für die vielen Tauben an, die auf dem besten Weg sind, sich zu einer Plage zu entwickeln.
