This exhibition has been possible thanks to the support of the ”la Caixa” Foundation, who have financed the restoration of the series of tapestries from the Seu Vella which are housed in the Museu de Lleida, and which has been an essential part of the ability to exhibit them in all their splendour.

The Capitol Cathedral of Lleida has one of the most important tapestry collections in the State, which has become a legacy of the artistic and liturgical splendour of the Seu Vella before it was turned into military barracks.

This important legacy is currently housed in the Museu de Lleida: diocesà i comarcal, a diocesan and regional museum that welcomed the tapestries for storage in 2001. From that time onwards, the Museum has taken care of their conservation-restoration, research and diffusion.

The exposition, which can be seen at the Seu Vella between May and October 2010, is the culmination of a project that began in 1992, when the first showing of the tapestry collection of Lleida cathedral was organised. On that occasion, the project was undertaken with the support of the ”la Caixa” Foundation, who, from that moment onwards, has been fully involved in the idea that arose from that event: the complete restoration of the entire collection.

In 2003, during the celebration of the exhibition “Seu Vella. L’esplendor retrobada”, the ”la Caixa” Foundation assumed the cost of the restoration of The prodigal son tapestry, with which another step was taken in the development of the project. The culmination came in 2006 when the project for the restoration of the entire collection was formalised with the signature of an agreement between the Generalitat de Catalunya and the ”la Caixa” Foundation.

This exhibition, with which we aim to present to the public the series of tapestries, once they have been restored, is the colophon of the entire process. However, the most important thing is the place where the exhibition is being held, that is, the Seu Vella, where the tapestries hung for nearly two-hundred years.
